Classic Indian Lentil Soup Recipe

Preparing The Ingredients For Indian Lentil Soup Recipe
Before cooking lentil soup, we have to wash it properly. Now chopped other ingredients such as onion, tomatoes and coriander leaves.
Cooking Onion and Tomatoes
Here, for making masoor dal soup or lentil soup, I have used Dutch oven but you can use any stock pot. First, heat extra virgin olive oil (You can use normal cooking oil. It actually depends on you.) on medium-flame.
Add bay leaf, cumin seeds, dry red chillies, chopped onion and ginger-garlic paste one by one and fry the onions till slightly golden brown or soft.
In this step, add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and salt. Saute for a while.
Now add some water and cook with the lid on until the tomatoes become soft and slightly mushy.
Next, add the washed lentils and saute for a while. Add water again and cover with a lid.
Boiling or simmer
In this step, cook with the lid on until the lentils become soft. If the lentils become soft, whisk a little to break the lentils. The heat should be on low flame.
Serving an Indian lentils soup – Before serving the soup, add garam masala and finely chopped coriander leaves. Mix them well, and lentil soup is now ready to be served.
Serve the lentil soup or masoor dal hot with Indian chapati or any plain boiled rice of your choice.

Best Indian Lentil Soup Recipe
In this Indian lentil soup recipe, I have used red lentil, tomato, onion, coriander, and various other ingredients. Those ingredients are available in the local market. I have also described the cooking method in a very easy way so that anyone can make the best Indian lentil soup recipe at home.
- 1 cup Red lentils / masoor dal
- 3 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pc Bay leaf
- 3 pcs Dry red chillies
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 pc Medium size onion (chopped)
- 1 tbsp Ginger and Garlic paste
- 2 pcs Medium size tomatoes (chopped)
- ¾ tsp Turmeric Powder
- ¾ tsp Red chilli Powder
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder
- Salt to taste
- ½ tsp Garam masala
- Some chopped coriander leaves
First, we have to wash properly 1 cup of red lentils in a bowl.
Heat 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil in a Dutch oven on medium-low flame. Add 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp of cumin seeds, 3 dry red chillies and saute for a few seconds.
Next, add 1 medium size onion (chopped) and saute for a while.
Add 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste and saute until the onions become slightly soft or brown.
In this step, we have to add 2 medium size tomatoes (chopped), ¾ tsp turmeric powder, ¾ tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, salt to taste and saute for a while.
Add ¼ cup of water and cook with the lid on until the tomatoes become soft and slightly mushy.
Now we have to add the washed lentils and saute for a while.
After sauteing lentils, add 5 cups of water and cook with the lid on until the lentils become soft.
In this stage, if the lentils become soft, whisk a little to break the lentils. The heat should be on low flame.
Now check the consistency and salt of the soup. If consistency and salt are perfect, add ½ tsp of garam masala and some chopped coriander leaves. Mix them very well and saute for a while.
Our delicious Indian lentil soup is now ready to be served. Now served with chapati or bread or plain boiled rice of your choice.
