Making a Dough

Making a Dough

First take a big-sized bowl, add 2.5 cup flour, 1 cup water and a little bit of ghee or oil. Mix well and start kneading a dough. Check out the consistency of dough. If you need more water or flour, add some water or flour. Make sure your dough has perfect consistency.

Now make a small sized ball and, using a rolling pin, roll all the balls one by one. Roll it thin until you have a 5 to 6 inch diameter circular roti.

Making Chapati or Roti

Now heat a pan or tawa on medium-high flame. Make sure the tawa is hot enough before you place the chapati or roti on the tawa. Let it cook for 15-30 seconds until you see some bubbles on the top side.

At this point flip the chapati, you don’t want the first side to cook too much. Now, let the other side cook more than the first side around 30 seconds more.

Use a tongs or wooden spoon to see how much it has cooked from the second side now. If you see brown spots all over, it means it has cooked enough.

Now, remove the roti from the tawa using a tongs or wooden spoon and place it directly on flame with the first side (which was a little less cooked) directly on the flame.

When cooking has done, to keep them warm, transfer to a kitchen towel. Serve along any gravy like chana masala, Aloo Gobi or Chicken Curry of your choice.

Tips to Make Soft and Fluffy Chapati

  • Cover the dough with wet cloth or poly paper and rest for at least 20 minutes and maximum 2 hours.
  • For getting soft chapatis, I recommend whole wheat flour.
  • Before placing the chapati on the tawa, make sure your tawa is properly heated.
  • You should roll the chapatis a little thin, not too thick or thin.
  • Roll all the chapatis evenly and rounded shaped.
  • After removing chapati from the tawa, brush some ghee or oil and put in the hot case.

How to Serve Chapati

As chapati is a popular food in Indian subcontinent and also all over the world, it is served with various curries or gravy like chicken curry, mutton curry, mutton kosha, chana masala, aloo gobi, chicken tikka kebab, chicken tandoori and many more.

When you remove the chapati from the tawa, spread some ghee or oil on it. It will give you extra flavour.
